Everything You Need to Know About Ordering Stone
Whether you're planning a driveway, a drainage project, or a large-scale construction job, the answers below will help you order with confidence.
The amount of stone required depends on the square footage of your area and the depth of the application.
- General Rule: One cubic yard of crushed stone covers approximately 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.
- Tonnage: Most of our products are sold by the ton. On average, one cubic yard of stone weighs about 1.3 to 1.5 tons.
Use our quick formula: (Length × Width × Depth in feet ÷ 27) × 1.4 = Total Tons. See the ordering checklist below for a full walkthrough.
Modified (e.g., 2A Modified) — Includes "fines" or stone dust. When compacted, the dust fills the gaps between the larger rocks, creating a surface that hardens almost like concrete. Ideal for bases and driveways.
Clean (e.g., #57 or #67) — Washed or screened to remove dust. This allows water to flow through the stone freely, making it the only choice for drainage projects, French drains, and septic systems.
We accommodate both. Customers with capable trucks or trailers are welcome to visit our quarry for a load-up. For larger projects, Wilber Trucking LLC provides professional delivery throughout Hallstead, Great Bend, and the surrounding Susquehanna County area.
Stone is extremely heavy. A standard pickup truck can typically only handle about ½ to 1 ton safely. For larger quantities, we utilize:
- Single Axle Dump Trucks — Ideal for residential driveways and tighter spaces.
- Tri-Axle Trucks — Best for large-scale construction sites and heavy haul roads.
Our drivers will attempt to "tailgate" spread the stone on driveways or dump it in a specific pile as requested. However, placement is subject to overhead hazards (power lines, low branches) and ground conditions (soft mud or steep slopes). The driver has the final say on whether a drop location is safe for the equipment.
Yes. A. Wilber Stone, Inc. operates portable stone crushing plants. If you have a large-scale project requiring a specific aggregate gradation not listed on our standard product menu, please contact us to discuss custom processing.
For a long-lasting driveway, we recommend a two-step process:
- The Base: Use 3's or 4 to 8 Minus for a solid foundation, especially if the ground is soft.
- The Top: 2A Modified provides a hard, packable surface, while #57s or #67s offer a cleaner look with better drainage.
Rip-Rap (our R-Rock series) is used primarily for erosion control. If you have a creek bank, a steep slope, or a drainage ditch where water moves quickly, these large stones "armour" the soil and prevent washouts.
Stone Selection Overview
| Best For… | Use This Stone | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Stable Bases | 2A / Modified | Packs tight to prevent shifting. |
| Drainage / Septic | #57 or #67 Stone | No dust; allows water to pass through freely. |
| Heavy Traffic | 4 to 8 Minus | Large stones provide structural integrity. |
| Erosion Control | R-Rock (Rip-Rap) | Heavy weight prevents soil washout. |
| Visual Finish | #8 / 1B | Small chips offer a clean, decorative look. |
Your Simplified Ordering Checklist
Follow these five steps to arrive at an accurate order — saving you time, money, and extra delivery trips.
Tonnage Formula
(L × W × D) ÷ 27 × 1.4 = Total Tons
L = Length (ft) • W = Width (ft) • D = Depth (ft, e.g. 3″ = 0.25 ft)
Determine Your Square Footage
Measure the length and width of your project area. Multiply them together for your total square footage.
Define Your Depth
Choose the right depth for your application:
- Driveways: 3–4 inches
- Walkways: 2–3 inches
- Base layers: 4–6 inches
Calculate Your Tonnage
Apply the formula: (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27 × 1.4 to get your estimated ton requirement.
Identify the Delivery Path
Ensure there are no low-hanging wires, tree branches, or soft septic areas that could prevent a large truck from reaching your drop zone.
Prepare the Drop Zone
Mark the area clearly with stakes or chalk so our drivers know exactly where you want the material placed.
